Castles

Balvaird Castle
Cycling to 5 different castles on an e-bike tour from Perth, where we headed out to Loch Leven via Bridge of Earn & Glenfarg, over the Ochil Hills, and then cycled across the Perthshire (and Fife) countryside, while also visiting Elcho Castle, Balvaird Castle, Burleigh Castle, and Lochleven Castle along the way, and then upon our return cycled via Strathmiglo and a climb up and down to Aberargie, finishing our tour with a visit to Balhousie Castle in the centre of Perth which is also the museum for The Black Watch regiment.

Cycled 80km’s in total on a great day out (10am till 5pm) using an e-bike.. so, no car.. no bus.. no vehicles involved! - just pedal power, loads of fresh air, a lunch break in Kinross next to Loch Leven, and some help getting up several steep hills by using our Dutch high end Gazelle pedal assisted electric bikes.
Balvaird Castle has recently been used as a filming location for the Outlander prequel, Blood of my Blood, where Balvaird Castle features as the location of ‘Castle Leathers’ in the Outlander series. Season 1 was broadcast in 2025, while season 2 can be seen from September 2026.

Elcho Castle
More on Loch Leven Castle, and the history involving Mary Queen of Scots, can be seen in previous post from May 2024 at:

Burleigh Castle, located just north of Loch Leven, was built in the 15th century, and shares one wall with what is now a main road (the A911), so there is no pavement!
